Philipp Reinfeld befasst sich mit den Möglichkeiten architektonischer Raumproduktion auf der Basis von Privatfotos, die in den sozialen Medien heute eine eigene Kommunikationsform herausgebildet haben. Seitdem Kameratechnik zur zentralen technischen Komponente des Smartphones geworden ist, erhält das fotografische Bild eine erweiterte Bedeutung und Funktionalität. Der fotografische Zugang zur Welt zielt heute weniger auf eine Bezeugung etwas vormals Geschehenem ab, als vielmehr auf eine laufend sich wiederholende Veräußerung eigenen Handelns im "Hier" und "Jetzt". Charles L’Eplattenier, Le Corbusier, René Chapallaz : la troisième de ces figures chaux-defonnières, un architecte indépendant actif entre le Jura bernois et le canton de Neuchâtel, est longtemps resté dans l’ombre. Collaborateur de L’Eplattenier à la réalisation du Musée des beaux-arts de La Chaux-de-Fonds, traducteur architectural de sa conception régionale de l’Art Nouveau, il l’assiste informellement au Cours supérieur de l’École d’art où il initie des étudiants - dont Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, futur Le Corbusier - à l’architecture. C’est toutefois dans un contexte de démocratisation de la photographie (1890-1914), à l’aune de l’histoire des représentations en architecture, que cet ouvrage présente un architecte singulier, spécialisé dans les enjeux constructifs phares de son époque, l’habitat, les constructions industrielles et le béton armé. Photographe amateur maîtrisant parfaitement la technique, il emploie d’abord le médium pour se constituer un répertoire personnel de modèles architecturaux et documenter son oeuvre exempte de vicissitudes. En construisant l’image de son architecture, il saura la valoriser et l’affilier, s’inscrivant dans un mouvement local et international de réflexion sur l’habitat (Domestic Revival) ou sur l’architecture des usines. À terme, le médium lui permettra de démontrer son savoir-faire tant à sa clientèle qu’à ses confrères par des publications, et de s’affirmer comme un architecte-artiste dépositaire d’un système de béton armé efficient. Si ce livre révèle l’oeuvre de Chapallaz, il met surtout en lumière les modifications cruciales qui s’opèrent au tournant du xxe siècle dans le lien des architectes aux images, par ce cas relativement inédit d’un architecte qui intègre la photographie à ses outils professionnels entre 1897 et 1926.

From landscape to photography and back again Landschaftsarchitektur und Fotografie sind eng miteinander verknüpft, ist doch erstere ein lebendiges, sich stets entwickelndes Gebilde, das durch die Fotografie verewigt werden kann. Welche Rolle spielt die Fotografie in der Gestaltung von Landschaft? Wie wird Landschaft durch die Fotografie neu kontextualisiert?Das Buch geht solchen Fragen anhand von neun Essays nordamerikanischer wie französischer Wissenschaftler nach: in Landschaftsgestaltungen in Europa und den USA von den 1950er Jahren bis heute. Ergänzt wird diese Analyse durch Gespräche von Landschaftsarchitekten und Fotografen und durch fünf Portfolios verschiedener Landschaftsarchitektur-Fotografen.
